Synopsis "Lock 9"

Set against the waters, islands, and working landscapes of Lake Champlain, Lock 9 continues the story begun in The Inland Sea, Sam Clark's acclaimed debut mystery. When a convicted murderer arranges a hit on retired Vermont State Police Detective Fred Davis, a case of mistaken identity leaves a respected forensic investigator dead and launches a tense investigation that stretches from the Inland Sea, to the Champlain Canal and the Hudson River.Detective Janice Pearlstein is convinced that Davis was the intended target. As she works methodically to uncover the truth, Jerome Smith, the hired killer, makes repeated attempts to correct his mistake by killing Fred.At the center of the story is Fred Davis and his extended family at the Davis Farm. At age fifty five, he must retire from the State Police. What is next for him? He has a sideline repairing old boats. Should he build that up into a full time business? His father Hiram, is slowly dying of both cancer and heart disease. Should Fred return to farming, which he has avoided most of his adult life? As always, he wants to reunite with his ex-wife Diane.
