Emma Reyes (Bogotá, 1919 – Bordeaux, 2003) was a prominent Colombian painter and writer whose life was marked by poverty and abandonment. Despite not having received formal education in her childhood, she developed a significant artistic career, influenced by naïve art, Mexican muralism, and expressionism. She studied at the academy of painter André Lhote in Paris and worked alongside Diego Rivera in Mexico. Her pictorial work is characterized by depicting everyday and cultural scenes from Latin America.

Her only literary work, Memory by Correspondence, published posthumously in 2012, compiles 23 letters addressed to the historian Germán Arciniegas between 1969 and 1997. In them, Reyes narrates with simple and moving prose her harsh childhood and youth. The book was acclaimed by critics and translated into several languages, consolidating her legacy as a unique voice in Latin American literature.
