Die Soziologie ist von der Renaissance nationaler und nationalistischer Bewegungen gegen Ende der achtziger Jahre überrascht worden. Der Band geht zunächst der Frage nach, welche theoriegeschichtlichen Entwicklungen für diese Unterschätzung verantwortlich zu machen sind. Im zweiten Schritt wird ein systemtheoretisch fundierter Ansatz vorgestellt, der die Nation als ein Konstrukt begreift, mit dessen Hilfe undurchschaubare soziale Prozesse vermeintlich verständlicher werden. Im abschlie enden dritten Teil wird anhand umfangreichen soziologisch-historischen Materials die Entwicklung des Konstrukts "Nation" bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart nachgezeichnet. "(...)
