Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell was a volume of poetry published jointly by the three Brontë sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne in 1846 (see 1846 in poetry), and their first work to ever go in print. To evade contemporary prejudice against female writers, the Brontë sisters adopted androgynous first names. All three retained the first letter of their first names: Charlotte became Currer Bell, Anne became Acton Bell, and Emily became Ellis Bell. The book was printed by Aylott and Jones, from London. The first edition failed to attract interest, with only two copies being sold. However, the sisters decided to continue writing for publication and began work on their first novels, which became commercial successes. Following the success of Charlotte's Jane Eyre in 1848, and after the deaths of Emily and Anne, the second edition of this book (printed in 1850 by Smith & Elder) fared much better, with Charlotte's additions of previously unpublished poetry by her two late sisters. It is believed that there are fewer than ten copies in existence with the Aylott and Jones title-page.

Daughter of the Anglican pastor Patrick Brontë, Charlotte Brontë lived with her family for most of her childhood, amidst that rugged and desolate landscape that would reappear as the backdrop of the fantastic and romantic episodes of her novels and those of her sister Emily.

Anne Brönte was the youngest of the Brontë sisters. Like her sisters Emily and Charlotte, she has gone down in literary history despite her short life and with only two novels written, which she published under the pseudonym Acton Bell. As a teenager, along with her sister Emily, she created the imaginary kingdom of Gondal, about which they both wrote stories and poems. At 19, she started working as a governess, but soon felt frustrated by her inability to properly educate what she saw as an unruly and spoiled youth. This experience helped shape her first novel, "Agnes Grey". The warm reception of this work allowed the appearance of her second and last novel, "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall", the following year. It tells the story of the arrival of a woman, seemingly a widow, and her young son to an old mansion, an event that triggers all kinds of reactions in the neighborhood. This novel was deemed immoral by her contemporaries due to the harshness of certain passages. Finally, Anne died of tuberculosis at the young age of 29.
