Eine Peritonitis ist eine akute Entzündung oder Infektion der dünnen Membran, die die intraabdominalen Organe bedeckt. Sie entsteht in der Regel durch die Perforation eines hohlen Verdauungsorgans oder durch die Ausbreitung eines intraabdominellen septischen Herdes. Sie kann meist generalisiert oder lokal begrenzt sein. Die akute generalisierte Peritonitis macht einen gro en Teil der abdominalen Notfälle aus. Laut Clément et al. ist sie ein weltweites Gesundheitsproblem mit einer Sterblichkeitsrate von bis zu 20 %. Im Jahr 2020 veröffentlichten Tochie et al. eine weltweite Prävalenz von 0,93% und eine Mortalität, die je nach Land und Ätiologie zwischen 8,4% und 34% schwankt. Nach der Hamburger Klassifikation ist sie nämlich primär, sekundär oder tertiär. Die sekundäre Peritonitis ist mit 98 % der Peritonitisfälle und 7 % der abdominalen Schmerzsyndrome die häufigste Form der Peritonitis. Sie kann nach einem Abdominaltrauma, durch Prellung oder Verletzung des Abdomens, durch perendoskopische Perforation oder durch das Vorhandensein eines intraabdominalen Fremdkörpers auftreten.
