So hat es Novalis formuliert: "Wir suchen uberall das Unbedingte, und finden immer nur Dinge." Aus dieser zentralen Idee wird die Romantik erklart: als Epoche, die um 1800 beginnt und deren Impulse bis in die Gegenwart fortwirken; als Bewegung, die in der Literatur stattfindet, aber auch andere Kunste und die Lebenspraxis ergreift; mit einem Schwerpunkt in der deutschen, aber Seitenblicken in die englische und amerikanische Kultur. Am Beginn dieser Einfuhrung stehen Wohngemeinschaften in Berlin, Jena und Heidelberg, nach der Erklarung ihrer zundenden Idee folgen Kapitel zum "Romantisieren" des eigenen Lebens, zu romantischen Bildern und zur Ironie, sodann geht es um politische Romantik, um Liebe und zuletzt auch um die Schattenseiten der Romantik, um Ziellosigkeit und Depression.
