Synopsis "THE COUNTING"

Every Halloween, the people of a dying Maine town gather to count themselves. The number always comes out one too many. Dana Michaud empties the houses of the dead for a living. Keep, sell, donate, dump. She is good at it because she never lets herself wonder who the people were. Then her mother dies in Tenney, Maine: the town she ran from forty years ago, pregnant and silent, and never once spoke of again. Tenney is three hundred people, one store, and a Grange hall where the whole town still gathers on October 31st for a bean supper. After the pie, they count off around the tables, one number each. Dana's aunt, the town clerk, reads the names of the year's dead from an old green ledger and writes a single word beside each one. Delivered. The next morning, no one in Tenney remembers Dana's mother. No one except Dana, who didn't say her number. And no one seems to notice the thin man in the gray wool jacket who sits at the end of the back table, in the same chair, in every supper photograph since 1911. Tenney will vote itself out of existence next November. Before then there will be one more count. And Dana is beginning to understand who the town will need to make it come out even. The Counting is a haunting novel of grief, memory, and the terrible mercy of forgetting, for readers of quiet, atmospheric New England horror.
