Synopsis "The Shit Man"

Yang Lee is a simple Chinese peasant boy born into a desperately poor family living in the remote village of Xiao Mao at the beginning of the twentieth century. Most of the Western world is caught up with the amazing inventions of the industrial revolution, yet China will remain entrenched in the ways of her ancient past for many more decades. Vast tracts of remote landscape within China's territories lay untouched by the frenetic pace and devouring technologies of the early twentieth century. Millions of simple peasants still live their humble lives in those quiet, dignified ways that have marked the lives of the Chinese people since biblical times. Yang Lee will grow up to serve in the most menial and humble of all jobs for his village. He will become the Shit Man for Xiao Mao when he is only sixteen. Every small town and village in China employs these public servants to keep their communal toilet-houses clean and respectable. Central plumbing, electricity, and private baths are unknown in these regions. Such luxuries only exist for those very few, wealthiest of people who live in larger cities. Being a Shit Man would be a life-sentence of hopelessness for most men, but Yang Lee is not daunted. Courage, geniality, and optimism are the hallmarks of Yang Lee's life. His future will be anything but ordinary.
