Dieser Zustand verursacht einen ständigen Zustand der Übererregung, der funktional und an den Überlebenskontext angepasst ist und es ihnen ermöglicht, eine Bedrohung zu erkennen und entsprechend zu handeln (Kampf oder Flucht). Es gibt jedoch einen schmalen Grat zwischen einer normalen Reaktion auf Stress und einer echten traumabedingten Störung, d. h. einer posttraumatischen Belastungsstörung.
