"Nothing said in this room may be relied upon, disclosed, or put in evidence in any proceeding. Not by me, not by either of you, not by anybody in this building. If we fail, we fail as though today had not happened."Iris Solberg has mediated four hundred and eleven disputes and has never once had a position. That is the job. She is paid an extraordinary amount of money to be the only person in the building with no side, and she has been the best in the country at it since she was thirty-four.Six weeks. A perfume house in Hudson. A dead man's widow, a formula worth a fortune, and a defendant who sits through the opening statement and says nothing at all.Nico Barrera has never gone four minutes without talking. He has also not told one living person the truth about 2008.On the fourth day he asks her to read the rule out loud. Just to him. In that room. And then he tells her.He keeps telling her. Every day, behind a shut door, for six weeks, because there is exactly one place on earth where he is allowed to be the man he actually is, and she is legally incapable of repeating a single word of it.Neither of them notices when it stops being a confession.By the time the process collapses, a court has questions about what happened in that room. And Iris Solberg is going to take the stand, under oath, in public, where eight words would end the whole thing and save every person she has spent six weeks protecting. She has spent her entire life not saying what she wants. She is about to find out what that cost.Tropes: forbidden - forced proximity - he falls first and says so - slow burn, then not - morally grey and knows it - dual POVStandalone. No cliffhanger. An ending that is earned rather than tidy.Explicit content, adult readers. Full content notes inside.
