Ana Luisa Amaral fue una reconocida poeta, escritora, traductora y profesora universitaria portuguesa. Nació el 5 de abril de 1956 en Lisboa, Portugal. Cuando tenía nueve años, se trasladó con su familia a Leça da Palmeira, cerca de Oporto, donde vivió gran parte de su vida.

Estudió Lenguas y Literaturas Germánicas en la Facultad de Letras de la Universidad de Oporto, institución en la que posteriormente trabajó como profesora de Literatura y Cultura Inglesa y Americana. En 1996 obtuvo un doctorado en Literatura Norteamericana con una investigación dedicada a la poesía de Emily Dickinson, poeta a quien también estudió y tradujo. Sus principales áreas de investigación fueron la poesía comparada, los estudios feministas y los estudios queer.

A lo largo de su carrera publicó más de treinta libros de poesía, teatro, ficción, literatura infantil y ensayo. Su obra fue traducida a numerosos idiomas y recibió importantes reconocimientos. Entre ellos destacan el Gran Premio de Poesía de la Asociación Portuguesa de Escritores y, en 2021, el Premio Reina Sofía de Poesía Iberoamericana.

Ana Luisa Amaral falleció el 5 de agosto de 2022. Su obra dejó una importante huella en la literatura portuguesa contemporánea y en la defensa de la igualdad y los derechos humanos.
